CIR REALTOR® Neil MacDonald makes it his mission every day to take his computer know-how, his knowledge of Calgary and his people skills and put them to work for his clients.
Neil – a pensioned retiree from a thirty-year career in telecommunications with TELUS, Manitoba Telephone System and Northern Telecom – employs his technological savvy to compile information and statistics for clients in a format they can understand, a font they can read, with numbers relevant to their particular situation.
“Great information makes for great decisions,” Neil says. “And because I’m comfortable with computers, I’ve created everything from a first time home buyer’s guide for clients to all sorts of spreadsheets that give people a quick understanding of the market, housing prices, comparable properties, and also a snapshot of their own finances.”
There’s no guesswork with Neil. He’ll sit down, budget with clients, and run their expenses right down to their credit card and car payments.
“I had one client who needed to get his debt down, and because of the trust we’d established and the numbers he’d shared, we got a very accurate picture of where he was compared to where he’d be if he moved. He made some big improvements based on that, and it was the snapshot of his finances that got us there,” Neil says.
Neil proudly calls himself ‘The Real Marlborough Man’ because of his Marlborough Mall kiosk and the many houses he’s bought and sold in the neighbourhood. As well, a lot of Neil’s business is with people in a transition of one kind or another, perhaps a senior who has lost a spouse or a couple going through divorce.
“It’s not pleasant, but these changes are part of life,” Neil says. “And when I can help a couple save some time and money during a separation by selling the house before the lawyers get involved, or a senior make a move they can feel good about, that’s what I like to do – make a difficult situation a little easier.” he says.
Neil’s relationship with his clients seldom ends when the house deal is done. He stays in touch with clients, and even offering lifts to the mall or the doctor. “Sometimes I get those calls from my older clients, needing a ride to get groceries, or to get their eyes checked. I’m happy to be in a position to help – heck, that’ll be me some day,” he jokes. Clearly, clients appreciate the extra care and attention, because it often results in repeat customers and referrals.
Neil’s relationship with his clients is also built on his philosophy that it’s best to be patient – not pushy – with clients. “I give people my information, I tell them what I can do, and then I let them know that because I’m on a pension myself, we can work on their time,” he says. In one case, Neil’s advice on home staging three years earlier resulted in a call from a client to list a home!
